Dear People of God:
Isaiah the prophet predicted that with the coming of Jesus there will be an "increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this" (Isaiah 9:7). What is the promise? More government: not bad but good government with justice and righteousness. God has come to establish his throne on earth.
In our country, neither Democracy nor the Constitution nor the three branches of government have ensured justice and righteousness consistently. Our history confirms that our collective consciousness and interpretation of what is good is a record of accumulated bias and inability to be equitable for all. In the quicksand of our current politics what is the role of the church?
The Church is called to be the prophetic voice that ushers in the kingdom of Jesus in such a way that it challenges the preserved power structures. Pharaoh had Moses, David had Nathan, Ahab had Elijah, Herod had John the Baptist; these bold prophets, at great personal risk, spoke truth to their rulers and in each speaking demonstrated God's zeal for his government on earth.
Lord give us Prophets who speak truth to the powerful!
